The Blue Grass Stakes and Arkansas Derby, contested Saturday as the final major tune-ups, only added to what looms as one of the thorniest editions of the Run for the Roses in its 137-year history.
Brilliant Speed, more a grinder than the burner his name would suggest, rallied from last to clip Twinspires by a nose in the $750,000 Blue Grass. His second victory in eight career starts was so improbable that backers received $40.20 for every $2 wagered on him to win.
Archarcharch, third to The Factor in the Rebel Stakes in March, was such a surprise in avenging that defeat in the $1 million Arkansas Derby that he paid $52.40ahead of onrushing Nehro.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia had said in the days leading to the Arkansas Derby that he would establish The Factor as the early favorite if he duplicated his rousing performance in the Rebel.
The Factor, heavy backed at 4-5 in the Arkansas Derby, was no factor. He faded to seventh, increasing doubts about whether he can be rated off the pace and handle the Derby's 1¼-mile distance.
The son of War Front had enjoyed an unpressured lead when he never looked back in coasting to a 6¼-length score in the Rebel at Oaklawn Park. When the Arkansas Derby was held there, J P's Gusto and Dance City rocketed to the top while Martin Garcia asked The Factor to bide his time.
Garcia did not get the hoped-for response, an ominous sign if the speedster advances to the opening leg of the Triple Crown. "My horse likes to be on the lead," Garcia said. "But there was so much speed in there and I didn't want to go with them. He didn't like to be taken back."
