NASCAR Sprint Cup Preview:

NASCAR announced last fall that a Sprint Cup race would be coming to Kentucky Speedway’s 1.5-mile tri-oval this season.

“I go back to when I was sitting with Jerry and we were sitting around thinking, ‘You know, maybe we should build a speedway,’ ” Simendinger said. “When we built the Speedway, if you notice how the original stands are dug into the hillside, it was always designed to put those expanded towers right where they are now. Yeah, this is the picture we had in our mind, but it’s taken a long time.

“That was back in 2000, so I didn’t think it would take 11 years to get here.”

Simendinger credits Carroll for having the drive to get the track built. He credits Smith with taking the ball and running with it.

“It’s one thing to have the vision. It’s another thing to make the vision a reality, and Bruton Smith is maybe one of two people in the United States to make that happen. The other one being a member of the France family. Bruton’s commitment to our track, to our marketplace and to this region has been tremendous,” Simendinger said.

Shortly after the conclusion of the IZOD IndyCar Series event last season over the Labor Day weekend, construction crews got busy making the vast improvements to the Speedway.

The grandstands went up, the main parking lot was blasted and graded out to make more room for race traffic. The addition of four new campgrounds — Smith named them Ponderosa, Hawk’s Landing, Bourbon Street and Millionaire’s Row — has expanded the capacity from 1,000 to 4,000 campsites.
Season camping reservations and those for the July races have sold out, but electric and nonelectric lots remain available for the Oct. 1-2 NASCAR Trucks and IndyCar Series weekend.

Pit row will be poured and the seats will all be bolted into place very soon.
